Allowance Race
Also called: allowance, allowance optional claiming
An allowance race sits above claiming level — the horses are not for sale — but below stakes level, with weight 'allowances' adjusted by each horse's recent record.
Allowance races are where a horse goes after it has used up its early conditions, before it's ready to try stakes company. They carry better purses than claimers and are a step up in class without the prestige (or entry fees) of a stakes.
