Breaking
Also called: breaking a horse, breaking yearlings
Breaking is the process of teaching a young, unhandled thoroughbred to accept tack, a saddle, and a rider, and to be ridden at the walk, trot, and gallop — usually in the fall of its yearling year.
Breaking is the foundation of a racehorse's education. A horse that's broken well — calmly and at its own pace — moves through every later stage of training more easily and tends to stay sounder; a horse that's broken poorly can carry physical or mental problems for the rest of its career. It's the service ML Thoroughbreds is best known for.
