Stud Fee
Also called: service fee, stallion fee
A stud fee is the price a breeder pays to breed a mare to a particular stallion — ranging from a few thousand dollars for a regional sire to six figures for a leading one.
The stud fee is the breeder's main upfront cost in producing a foal, and it shapes how the resulting horse is valued at auction. A successful runner produced by a modest stud fee is a notable achievement — it means the horsemanship outran the pedigree.
