Dam
A dam is the mother of a particular horse.
On a pedigree page, 'out of [mare name]' identifies the dam. A strong 'female family' — a dam, granddam, and so on that produced stakes horses — is one of the most prized things a horse can have, because producing ability tends to run down the female line.
