Mare
Also called: broodmare
A mare is a female thoroughbred five years old or older; a 'broodmare' is a mare used for breeding.
A mare's race record matters, but a stakes-quality mare is often worth more as a broodmare than as a runner — her foals inherit her speed and her female family. A strong 'broodmare band' is the foundation of any breeding operation.
