The Wire
Also called: the finish line, gate to wire, wire to wire
'The wire' is the finish line of a race — historically marked by a wire strung across the track above the line.
To 'wire' a field is to lead from start to finish ('gate to wire' or 'wire to wire'). The phrase has stuck even though tracks now judge the finish with a mirror or an electronic beam rather than an actual wire.
