Stallion
Also called: stud, standing at stud
A stallion is an intact male thoroughbred used for, or retired to, breeding — 'standing at stud.'
A colt that performs well enough on the track — typically a graded stakes winner — can be retired to stud and charge a stud fee per mare bred. A popular, productive stallion is the most valuable asset in the sport; one good crop of runners can be worth tens of millions.
